Lucknow, September 7. 1330 hrs IST/ 0800 hrs
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today filed his nomination paper for the Lucknow Lok Sabha parliamentary Constituency at 1220 IST. Mr Vajpayee filed four sets of the papers, one each proposed by BJP state president Raj Nath Singh, Urban Development Minister Lalji Tandon, Mayor S C Roy and former Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor H K Awasthi. Earlier he participated in a havan at the inauguration of his election office. He then proceeded in a procession for the District Collector's office. People of Lucknow had turned up in large numbers to felicitate him and shower rose petals on their leader who is seeking re-election for the third time from this constituency.
If the presence of banners, posters and flags are an indication, the Congress Party has already given up the fight in Awadh. In Lucknow city, the predominant colour was saffron as it welcomed its leader. Flags of the BJP were the only visual presence of a city going to polls on October 3.
The Congress has yet to announce its candidate for the seat. Judging by the mood in Lucknow, the Congress nominee would be nothing more than a straw in the wind.
The state BJP unit and the state government had rolled out the red carpet for the Prime Minister to file his nomination. This would be the first time Mr Vajpayee would be filing his nomination as the caretaker Prime Minister.
